Vaccine Prevents Cancer

Great news on the medical front for women! An experimental vaccine from Merck & Co., Inc., GARDASIL, has proven to be 100% effective at preventing cervical cancer in clinical trials.

The vaccine protects against two of the strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) most likely to lead to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, causing an estimated 225,000 deaths each year.

Ideally, the vaccine would be administered to young women before they are sexually active and thus before they are exposed to the cancer causing virus.

According to an earlier article by Katha Pollitt in The Nation, this has raised some social conservatives eyebrows; some of whom are concerned that the vaccine could encourage young women to have sex. Pending FDA approval, the vaccine could be available in early 2006.

Aradia has been offering well-woman care including Pap smears and annual exams to all women regardless of socio-economic, cultural, racial, ethnic or sexual identity status for 33 years. We pride ourselves on ensuring that all women receive the highest quality care available. We will keep you updated on the status of this potentially life-saving medical breakthrough and its availability at Aradia Women's Health Center.

The Conference Call That Chills...
James Dobson Reveals the Truth Behind the Harriet Miers Nomination

One of the most chilling quotes from last week's conference call (jointly hosted by Ken Mehlman of the Republican National Committee and Tim Goeglen from the White House Office of Public Liason featuring most of the key grassroots religious operatives and legal stars on the far right, including James Dobson) was this one from Mr. Dobson himself:

"He and she [the president and Miers] both understand that if she were to get on the court, and she were to rule in ways that are contrary to the way the president would want her to approach her role as a justice, it would be a deep personal betrayal, and would be perceived as such both by him and by her."

The flurry of activity around John Roberts' nomination to Supreme Court Justice (and ultimately Chief Justice) should hopefully now spark fireworks with this new nomination. The Harriet Miers nomination is cronyism at its worst but the fact that a small group of neo-conservative, ultra-religious, far-right Christians have an insiders view into our country's most important judicial nominations is far scarier.

"The Time Has Come to Tell Our Protestors: Enough is Enough!"

Youve seen footage of them blockading clinics on television. Youve heard stories of their scare tactics, vulgar language and violent threats. You might think that it happens somewhere else. In regions more conservative and intolerant. I am speaking of anti-choice protesters and they are mobilizing in your backyardright here in Seattle. Two to three times a week, groups of picketers in numbers ranging from a handful to several dozen line the streets outside Aradia Womens Health Center. Here, in our city. Threatening our sisters, mothers and friends.

While we support their right to freedom of speech, it does not come without cost. Aradia must employ a police officer to keep the peace and ensure the safety of our clients. Women who come to us seeking respect and empowerment are bombarded with the hateful opinions of strangers. Often they walk through our doors shaken by the experience.

Heres how it works: You choose to pledge an amount of money for each picketer who shows up at our steps from now until December 31. (You may also decide to pledge for just one month at a time.) An average pledge might be from $0.50 to $5.00 per picketer. For details please click on the link below or call our Development Department at (206) 322-7808.

Please join us in telling those who wish to trespass on a womans decision that our numbers, our commitment and our resolve are stronger.
