Amie Newman, Communications Manager Aradia Women's Health Center
Seattle, WA, July 14, 2006 On Tuesday, August 1st
, The Comedy Underground will be teaming up
with Seattles reigning Diva of Comedy
Peggy Platt for a Non-Profit Comedy Event,
an evening of unrestrained hilarity to
benefit Aradia Womens Health Center. The
event will begin at 8:30 p.m with doors
opening at 7:30p.m. The Comedy Underground
is located at 222 S Main St (under Swannies
Sports Bar in Pioneer Square). There will be
a $10 cover charge with 50% of the proceeds
donated to Aradia. Tickets will be available
at the door.
Peggy Platts irreverent comedy has been
revered in Seattles feminist and
progressive circles for more than 20 years.
She was the winner of the 1985 Seattle
International Comedy Competition. Peggy is
also behind many of Seattles comedy
favorites, such as Dos Fallopia and Ham
for the Holidays.
Aradia Womens Health Center continues to
provide non-judgmental healthcare to women,
and to defend reproductive rights and
freedoms. Aradias recent advocacy efforts
have been instrumental in opposing the
conscience clause favored by the Washington
State Board of Pharmacy that would allow
pharmacists to refuse to fill emergency
contraception prescriptions due to moral
objections. In addition, Aradia has
successfully implemented a Pledge-a-Picketer
fundraising campaign, and actively advocated
for the passage of HB2481, a bill that
protects abortion providers from losing
their insurance as a result of arson or
bombings. In 2006, Aradia launched our new
grant-funded teen health education program,
CONNECT, designed to reduce sexually
transmitted infections and unplanned
pregnancies among teens in our city.
